FAQ
The image is first downsampled (longest edge at most 160 pixels, fully transparent pixels skipped), then a median-cut algorithm clusters the pixels into at most 8 groups, shown from largest area share to smallest; each swatch gives its representative color (the cluster average) in HEX / RGB / HSL with the share, and the first swatch is the dominant colour.
Slightly. Median cut keeps bisecting by colour-gamut width, and the swatch count decides how many splits happen, so under different counts each cluster's representative (average) colour drifts a little - the same behaviour mainstream design tools have, not a bug.
Yes. Click any swatch to copy its HEX; or copy the whole set in one go (a HEX list or CSS variables, two formats) and use it to colour a page or UI. Each swatch also shows its contrast ratio against white and black text, handy for judging readability.
No. Decoding, sampling and clustering all happen in your browser (canvas) - the image never leaves the machine, and reloading clears it.
